Grief has a way of knocking the wind out of us. Losing someone you love leaves a space no one else can fill, and even the simplest days can feel impossibly heavy. In those moments, we need words that breathe life back into our weary souls—words that remind us God is still near, still faithful, and still holding us together even when everything else feels like it’s falling apart.

Below are some of my favorite Scriptures and quotes for the brokenhearted—truths to cling to when the waves of grief feel overwhelming. My prayer is that they bring you comfort and hope right where you are today.

1. Psalm 34:18

"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."

There’s something deeply reassuring in knowing that God doesn’t keep His distance when we’re hurting. He draws near, not just to comfort us, but to carry us. When your heart feels shattered, remember—you are not alone in this valley.

2. “God never wastes our pain. Every tear has a purpose in His plan.” — Unknown

Grief can make us feel like everything is meaningless. But this truth reminds us that God can redeem even our deepest wounds. Your tears are not wasted—they are seen, and they matter to Him.

Final Thoughts

Grief is messy, unpredictable, and deeply personal. But here’s the hope: you are never walking through it alone. God is with you in every tear, every question, every quiet moment when your heart feels too heavy to carry. These Scriptures and quotes aren’t quick fixes—but they are reminders of a God who holds you close, even when life feels broken.

Take these words with you. Write them down. Pray them out loud. And let them remind you—there is still hope, still purpose, and still a God who loves you beyond measure.

3. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

"The God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God."

God doesn’t just comfort us for our sake—He equips us to pour that same comfort into others. The very pain that breaks us today may become the testimony that heals someone else tomorrow.

4. “Sometimes when you’re in a dark place you think you’ve been buried, but you’ve actually been planted.” — Christine Caine

Grief feels like darkness, like being swallowed up. But what if this isn’t the end? What if God is planting something new, something that will one day bloom into hope? Even in sorrow, He is at work.

5. Psalm 73:26

"My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever."

When we’ve reached the end of our own strength, this verse reminds us that God is our portion—our enough. He becomes the steady anchor when everything else feels uncertain.

6. “When you can’t trace His hand, trust His heart.” — Charles Spurgeon

There will be days when nothing makes sense and God feels silent. In those moments, trust doesn’t come from understanding His plan—it comes from knowing His character. His heart for you is good, even when life is not.

7. Revelation 21:4

"He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain."

This promise points us forward to a day when grief will be no more. No more empty chairs, no more aching hearts. Until then, we hold on to this hope: the story isn’t over yet.

8. “Hardship often prepares an ordinary person for an extraordinary destiny.” — C.S. Lewis

It’s hard to imagine anything good coming from loss, but God sees a bigger picture. He uses even the hardest seasons to shape us, strengthen us, and draw us closer to Him in ways we never expected.

9. Lamentations 3:22-23

"Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning."

Grief may feel endless, but mercy meets us fresh every single day. Even when yesterday was unbearable, today carries new grace. One day, one breath, one step at a time.

10. “His strength is perfect when our strength is gone.” — Steven Curtis Chapman

You don’t have to muster up strength you don’t have. God isn’t asking you to be unshaken—He’s asking you to lean on Him. In your weakness, His power shines the brightest.
